Posted by pizzaking  on Apr 20, 2006 (8164 Reads)
Ars Food Court The Ars Food Court was recently moved to a new server so I spent a bit of time tidying thinks up by pulling out some of the old team sites that were sat in directories gathering dust on the old server and collecting them together. Enter the Ars Food Court Archive.

Enjoy the nostalgia!

   Google Analytics
Posted by Admin  on Nov 15, 2005 (9667 Reads)
Ars Food Court I have signed the FoodCourt up for Google Analytics.
It is a Sophisticated. Easy. Free. Service

Google Analytics should tell us everything we could ever want to know about how our visitors found the Food Court and how they interact with it. We should be able to focus improve the site to attract more visitors.

Sophisticated, yet easy to use.

Google believes that web analytics should be simple and sophisticated at the same time. they have designed Google Analytics to have enterprise level capabilities and yet still be accessible to anyone who wants to improve their site design. Google Analytics delivers all the features one can expect from a high-end web analytics offering, and provides timesaving AdWords integration features. Which we should put back on again

Integrated with AdWords.

If we get an AdWords account up and running again, we can use Google Analytics directly from the AdWords interface. Google Analytics is the only product that can automatically provide AdWords ROI metrics, without us having to import cost data or add tracking information to keywords. Of course, Google Analytics can track all of our non-AdWords initiatives as well.

You can find the links in the Main Menu on the lefthand side. Start adding content to them. That is why we have these features.

   About the AFC Site Update
Posted by Admin  on Sep 28, 2005 (9392 Reads)
  Ars Food Court

The core Ars DC site, the Ars FoodCourt, has had a major software upgrade. Some features that were previously not working or had limited functionality, are now working very well. I will outline a few of the main improvements to have been made to the site in no particular order.

  1. The AFC now has a Wiki module installed. It if a fully functional wiki, based upon the  ErfurtWiki software
  2. The user blog is also fully functional, with more features and better controls.
  3. A web based visual editor for MS IE and Gecko (Firefox, Mozilla), called TinyMCE has been installed. It works for all textarea entry forms, apart from the Wiki ones
  4. The Comments function has been restricted to registered users. This is because there were too many spam comments from anonymous users.
  5. The Ars Technica News feed is back and working.
  6. The core software, including some major security fixes, has been upgraded
  7. The site themes are upgraded
  8. Plus lots of minor updates and fixes all around.

I hope the FoodCourt will be used, as it does contain a lot of useful information for Distributed Computing enthusiasts. Any registered user can play around with the site. If there is anything missing, or if you fell like helping out, then please join in.

   We're back
Posted by pizzaking  on Sep 25, 2005 (8928 Reads)
Ars Food Court The site is back up and running thanks to the hard work of heretic and JDAW. Most things are working after the upgrade but there are a few functions not quite right that are still being worked on.

If you spot anything that is broken then add a comment, pop into IRC (channel #afcdesign) or post in the Ars forums

   Looking for a Historian....
 Posted by magicfan241  on Sep 15, 2004 (2903 Reads)
  Ars Food Court

Recently, several projects have ended, and several more are nearly ended. With this in mind, we are asking for someone to come foward and write a chronicle that is the History of Ars Technica DC. It can be one person or several. You might have experience in one project but not others, hopefully we will be able to combine efforts to create a wonderful history of Ars DC.

Google Ads and Blog for every AFC registered user
Posted by Admin  on Jul 24, 2004 (3324 Reads)
  Ars Food Court

We have added an experimental blogging feature, called v4bJournal, to the the foodcourt to increase the variety of contents on the AFC. The reason we want more varied contents is the new Google ads we have added to the site, and to get more varied ads on the site we need more varied contents.

v4bJournal is a journalling/blogging module: each registered user has the ability to maintain a journal. All users can browse the available journals and their contents. Journal entries consist of a title, text, an image and a mood stamp.

Changes and updates to the FoodCourt
Posted by Admin  on Apr 03, 2004 (3643 Reads)
  Ars Food Court

Due to the good response on Loudergoods' FrontPage Pimpage (FPP), for Team Egg Roll, we experienced some problems with performance and availability of the team sites and the FoodCourt. The main cause was the php engine that created too high load on the server.

As an immediate remedy we disabled certain, little used, features on the sites, in the hope that the load on the server would decrease enough to carry us through the peak load. In addition to that we are also working on tuning the mysql database for a higher load, and a higher number of users.

In the short term this is about as much we can do for the time being. In the long term we need to evaluate the hosting situation. We share the current server with a lot of other sites. This is probably not beneficial in the long run, as we hope, and expect, the sites to grow, both in size and features.

Posted by Marc  on Feb 03, 2004 (3496 Reads)
Ars Food Court with the foodcourt back up we are starting to get back to where we were in spite of the short period of inactivity.

A number of things still need fixing. The first Item on that list is the team lamb chop page. As soon as we can figure out how the stats updating process works exactly and who owns the domain we'll get it back online.

Below are a list of the various sites heretic managed for the ars DC community and their current status:

   New project for the AFC
Posted by Admin  on Nov 22, 2003 (3640 Reads)
  Ars Food Court
Swatkins wrote this in the DCA thread [All] What kind of Ars will we be?
I was wondering if a “Scoreboard” (for lack of a better term) could be created. We have so many great stats people that this should be a piece of cake for them. On this scoreboard we could list the project, its current output levels, current position, power needed to sustain the current level and amount of power needed to increase a current position.

Ars Food Court I have installed some Flash games on the site. They can be accessed from the Games menu in the Main Menu. These games will keep a list of top scores, but only if you are a registered user and are currently logged on.

We are currently having some problems with the newsfeed from Ars Technica. The feed will be disabled until the problem has been sorted.

   30.000 page views
Posted by Admin  on Oct 17, 2003 (2870 Reads)
Ars Food Court The new Ars Food Court site has proved to be somewhat more successful than its predessor. So far, in just a couple of months, it has achieved nearly 30.000 page views. Those numbers also include page views from users with administrative rights on the site, which are not counted in the stats. :-D
